About This Story

Girls Who Smoke is a fifteen-minute short film adapted from Jen Hixson's true story that she told live on stage at The Moth.  We aimed for a slice-of-life, realistic, yet not overly heavy, feel.  It's a simple story; essentially

a long walk home by our main character, Jenny, and set against a backdrop of domestic abuse, the working class and small town America.

Producer Statement

Director, Tawny Foskett, wrote the adaptation of Jenifer Hixson's story with screenwriter, Gordon Farrell, and the 15-minute film was produced by Blue Turn Productions (Laurie Rud and Quan Robinson), The Auteur Tribe (Tawny Foskett) and Kipany Pictures (Melissa Beth).  It was filmed on location in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Most members of the creative team are women, including the award-winning German cinematographer, Sanne Kurz, producer Laurie Rud, associate producers Melissa Beth and Tawny Foskett, and art director Irina Arnaut.

We were thrilled not only to play in the Bechdel-test-passing (two women, who talk to each other, about something besides just men!) Bluestockings Screening Series, but then to go on and screen again in two of their "best of" selections.  It was also a wonderful experience to meet such great women, part of UN Women, and fellow directors, when we screened at Through Women's Eyes Film Festival in Sarasota, Florida.
